„Human Rights Watch“ hat ein 57-Seiten lange Studie über die Auswirkungen der restriktiven Abtreibungsgesetze in Irland veröffentlicht. Fokus wird auf die finanziellen, psychischen, physischen und gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen der Menschensrechtsverletzung durch den irischen Staat gelegt.
The Irish government actively seeks to restrict access to abortion and consequently violates
women’s human rights. The potential imposition of life-time prison sentences for procuring
an abortion in Ireland in and of itself threatens the right to liberty and security as women
may risk prison for seeking to exercise their right to health. Further, the Irish government
limits access to information about safe and legal abortion services through restrictive
legislation. It has sought to prevent individual women from traveling abroad for abortion
through injunctions and it refuses to regulate access to legal abortion within Ireland. The
government does nothing to mitigate the consequences of a very divisive public abortion
debate on women’s ability to exercise their full range of human rights. Critically, the
government has not taken steps to regulate the provision of blatantly misleading and false
information by so-called “rogue” agencies, to the detriment of women’s emotional and
physical health. The Irish government declined to be interviewed for this report and
indicated that it had no plans to review the current situation.
